Signs advertising local schools events, Hungerford’s Food & Antique Markets are among those to go missing over the past week.

Just an update from us…
Thank you.
We are overwhelmed and totally blown away by everyone who has reached out with ideas and research about how we can keep the cows safer.
Please don’t stop messaging us with anything you may see that could help.
A LOT of work is currently happening in the background.
Ultimately, we’ve realised that we can’t do this alone. We’re going to need that Hungerford ‘community spirit’ to come alive and we’ll have more news soon.
But from everyone at The Town and Manor (especially Pip the Herdsman) … THANK YOU!!

It is with great sadness we have learnt of the death of General Sir Mike Jackson GCB, CBE, DSO.
Sir Mike, a proud Hungerford resident, passed away surrounded by his family, yesterday evening, aged 80.
The Town Hall’s Union Jack, will be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect to Sir Mike Jackson and all he has done, not only for Hungerford, but for our Country.
Below a recent picture of Sir Mike, Constable Julie Lloyd and Mayor Helen Simpson, at the recent D-Day Parade.
Our thoughts are with Sir Mike’s family at this sad time.

Bumps on the road
🐄 IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN 🐄
Yet another animal hit by an irresponsible driver who could not be bothered to inform us.
The bits are from a “transit” type of van.
These are only the big bits. The glass and smaller pieces are spread over 50 metres!
The collision was on the kintbury end in the direction of the cattle grid. We will obviously be keeping an eye on the poor animal which is now very lame and separated from the herd.
So the public are aware, the cow that was hit is number 40 with the blue tag.
The police have been informed.
The cows are due for some tests this week and then will be being moved away from the common in the next few weeks.
The reflective collars are being looked in to ahead of next year, but unfortunately- the research isn’t as promising as it may appear.
This is the worst year we have had with the cows and options will be being looked in to.
Thank you for your continued support.

I like the idea of returning the roads to gravel, and also banning artics and other large vehicles (although that might have other consequences). A large sign at each gate with a contact number and a request to call if an accident occurs would also maybe help.
Best idea is a camera recording entrance and exit
Hi. If all of the cows are marked with an ear tag it should be fairly simple to use reflective/illuminous ear tags. I think they use something similar in the New Forest.
I know some people would think it’s too big brother but I wouldn’t mind if my car was recorded as I entered and left the common. The common belongs to the cows not the vehicles. I like Spike’s idea of reflective/illuminous ear tags. It’s so sad how many cows have been hit this year. Why on earth would you not stop if you have hit an animal!
Would it be wise to have CCTV somewhere? Might not see an incident but would be a deterrent plus a visual of vehicles on the Common? ANPR seems to be everywhere nowadays?

Please can all social media platforms that Hungerford Common are associated with, be flooded with the number of who to contact if a cow is hit. So lots of FB groups, including all the villages FB groups that are around the common, Nextdoor, instagram, etc. Encourage everyone to save the contact and number on their phone. Use black characters on yellow background. Make it stand out and be in everyone’s feed! Include the @everyone.
I would be interested to see if there's a trend when theses collision unfortunately happen during the year- seems to be more when the light changes.
No excuse nearly murdering defenseless animals. Is any sort of CCTV possible to catch them?
This is awful 😞 so many cars drive that road with zero care, tailgating etc. Poor cows, makes me sick how someone can do that. Definitely think CCTV and reflective tags on the cows is a great way forward
Pity they didnt leave a number plate, re the luminous ear tags suggestion - this is only ok if the animal is looking towards the vehicle, no good from behind or side if animal turned away. Cctv cameras by the cattle grids to record all vehicles crossing the common would show a vehicle with recent damage
Get rid of the tarmac and put it back down to gravel as it would have been years ago, that with slow the cars down.
When was it discovered? Anyone who's driven across the common who might have dashcam footage showing the debris, that might pinpoint the timescale?
This makes my blood boil. Why would you not get in touch with the farmer and get the poor animal help. Shame on you
Speed bumps at various places on the road across common would slow the traffic down .There is no need to go that fast
Peugeot boxer can tell by the bumper and mirror newer model
Speeding probably
Posting some advice from online research
Speed humps and a 20mpg limit might be the way to go , I am glad that vans going to have a big bill
Hypocrisy is real.
🐄 Freeman’s Marsh 🐄
Just to let you all know, the cows have now left the Marsh for the winter!

Have they been taken off the common as well ?
Used to be a lovely stretch of water. Big grayling and some lovely brown trout 30 years ago. Full of all wildlife. Now left to ruin, not wildlife sadly.
