A bit of a serious post this evening, we’re afraid!
As many of you will be aware, this has been a difficult start to the cattle grazing season on the Common.
Sadly, there have been several incidents involving the cattle, resulting in some animals needing to be removed by our local farmer to recover. Three more cows also had to be separated from the herd and looked after by the herdsman and veterinary staff.
Over the weekend, one of our cattle became seriously, seriously ill. Following veterinary investigation, it has been confirmed that the cause was the ingestion of a noxious object which resulted in a blockage in her intestines.
Despite continued efforts to educate and encourage responsible behaviour, we are still finding dangerous litter being left across the Common.
Last weekend alone, items collected included a deflated helium balloon, a metal bar with screws sticking out, along with numerous cans, bottles and coffee cups — all of which pose a very real risk to livestock, wildlife, dogs and people alike. This comes on top of recent illegal fly-tipping incidents.
Dog fouling also remains a growing issue and a cow investing dog poo could well be fatal!
We are also now at a point where people are actively avoiding the common due to the dog poo issue.
We would like to sincerely thank those who do take their litter home and responsibly pick up after their dogs — your efforts are genuinely appreciated.
Please help us protect the Common, our livestock, wildlife, and the environment for everyone to enjoy. Dispose of litter responsibly, pick up after your dogs, and encourage others to do the same.

Could it be organised as a community event to go round the common and pick up litter? I’m sure a lot of people wouldn’t mind volunteering their time if you made it a group/communal activity at a set date and time
We have bags and grabbers at the pub The Downgate Pub, Hungerford if anyone is interested in picking up litter on there dog walk. All help is needed to keep out beautiful Common safe for the cows and people who love to walk it.
Used to pick up bottles, cans and paper that people just dump, infuriating that they can’t just take it home
there do seem to be a lot of cows this year. is it a larger herd? sad news it’s been a rocky start.
Why are we such a disgusting society these days.wgat is wrong with people today.very sad.
2 legs bad, 4 legs good.... animal farm, George Orwell.
I'm always picking up other people's litter too, it makes my blood boil. 😡 I know they ought to take their litter home but if a bin was installed by the car park, a type with flaps to stop cows and birds, perhaps it would encourage those lazy people to at least stop littering the common.
What a beautiful asset Hungerford Common is for our little town. It's sad we have to remind some folk how to behave and to respect this beautiful area. Sorry to hear about the young cows. Hope everything settles down. 🙏 🐄 🌳
It’s sad that people need to be told these things! Hope it gets sorted soon
Shame - Get cctv set up to catch the culprits either that or your have to set up some kind of local Common watch group
Dooing everything we can .#downgate
What is wrong with people this is awful i picked larger cans the other day
Why are people so irresponsible and selfish. Perhaps some patrols or volunteer litter pickers could be established.
What is wrong with people
Why are some humans so darned lazy? If you are reading this and have littered the Common or let your dog 💩 without picking it up, hang your head in shame 😡

There’s something very special about keeping history ticking…
Last week, our Town Hall clock underwent a full service, ensuring this beautiful piece of heritage continues to run smoothly for years to come. We’re pleased to say the irregular pre-chime ‘bong’ has now been fully resolved — so you should hear a much more consistent and reliable chime going forward!
As these photos show, the clock mechanism dates all the way back to 1866, with the bells cast in that very same year. That’s over 150 years of timekeeping at the heart of our town — and still going strong.
A huge thank you to those involved in maintaining and caring for this incredible piece of engineering. It’s not just a clock… it’s part of Hungerford’s story.
Next time you hear it chime, take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship behind it ⏰
